How to Place Furniture 101

So you have bought some new furniture, or are planning on buying some, to update the look of your home, and you have no idea where to place or arrange the furniture. This can be difficult as many of us do not know how to make a living space aesthetically pleasing. Below are 5 tips to help you achieve the look you want with your new furniture.

These are in no particular order.

Tip #1: Use different sizes of furniture. With every piece of furniture, you will have different dimensions regarding length, width and height. To add interest to a space, bring in a different sizes of furniture. However, having similar sized furniture will allow for a more relaxing atmosphere with your cocktail ottoman, while extreme differences will trigger a more exciting environment.

Tip #2: Measure the room and furniture. This is a given for some, but for many it is often an overlooked step. Nothing is worse than buying a great piece of furniture only to have it not fit well in the space you want it to. So measure the room and furniture twice to make sure it fits correctly, and also measure hallways and entrances to ensure the piece can travel where you want it to.

Tip #3: Create balance. This will constitute a healthy relationship between pieces, whether they are symmetrical or asymmetrical. This is similar to tip number 1, in that balance will depend on what the room will be used for. Symmetrical balance is more relaxing while asymmetrical is more visually exciting, while helping put everything into motion.

Tip #4: The use of scaled piece. Scale refers to the size of the pieces in relation to the room and to each other. Different scaled pieces can cause unrest and an uncomfortable atmosphere. Having a asymmetrical or symmetrical room is great, but do not allow various scales of furniture pieces in infiltrate the same room.

Tip #5: Use artwork to create depth. Artists, such as painters, create depth by placing objects in the foreground, midground, background and use a vanishing point in their paintings. You can do the same thing by placing an item such as a chair in the foreground, a martini ottoman in midground, and the couch or wall will be the background. Having artwork or a window can serve as a vanishing point if you like.

Using these tips will surely help you create the desired living space you have been looking for. Also, be sure to always test different direction and locations of your furniture to achieve optimal function.
